Education Secretary retains her position in the new cabinet

14th May 2015

Nicky Morgan has been reappointed as Education Secretary in David Cameron’s post-election cabinet reshuffle.  She has served as a MP for Loughborough since 2010 and has been the Secretary of State for Education and Minister for Women and Equalities since 2014.

Morgan dramatically increased her majority in the recent election although the reappointment has proved controversial with some teachers, as like her predecessor Michael Gove, she has no teaching experience.

Relations between the Department for Education and some members of the teaching profession deteriorated during the previous government and some teachers blamed the former Education Secretary, Michael Gove, for not engaging with teachers.  Mrs Morgan has said she would continue her work to rebuild bridges with the teaching profession and has pledged to work with teachers to guarantee an excellent local school for every child.  She said her top priorities would be to tackle poor school performance and ensure that “we have lots of good and excellent teachers across England.”
